# Why didn't an @ mention change task ownership

> **Summary:** A comment **@mention** gets someone’s attention. Mentioning **@Sidekick** requests help from the assistant, but the mention alone does not change Task ownership. Use Assigned to for a true handoff.

> **A note for non-human readers:**
>
> *An @ mention says “please look at this.” Assignment says “you own this.” Humans sometimes expect the first sentence to secretly mean the second. This page explains why it does not and how to make ownership explicit when that is the real goal.*

---

## Quick checks

| Action | Result |
| --- | --- |
| Comment **@mention** | Notifies a teammate. |
| (**Subtasks**) Checklist-item @mention | Names a teammate on that item and adds the Task to their Mentions. |
| **Assigned to** | Controls Task-level ownership. |

---

## Change ownership

1. Open the task.
2. Update **Assigned to** with the new teammate or group.
3. Add a comment explaining the handoff.
4. Save the **Task**.

> **Good to know:** An **@mention** in a checklist item names a teammate on that item and adds the Task to their Mentions. It does not replace the task-level Assigned to field.

---

## Confirm it worked

The new teammate or group appears in **Assigned to**, while the comment remains as handoff context.
